Robert Lee Yates appeared to many, including his wife and five children, as a big-hearted family man and a military hero. However, in reality he lived a twisted double life, and murdered at least thirteen sex workers from 1975 to 1998. Yates would solicit sex from the women, usually from his van, before ruthlessly killing them with a single gunshot to the head afterwards.
While mostly he would dispose of the bodies in rural locations, on one disturbing incident he buried a body outside the bedroom window of his family home while his wife slept mere yards away. Yates was eventually arrested in 2000 and sentenced to death, although this was later commuted to life in prison.
What could have made this self-described family man turn to such an abhorrent second life?
