Ukraine : Life Under Attack : Dispatches | Channel 4 27 June 2022

Junior Bake Off | Channel 4 28 January 5:00pm

This documentary, narrated by Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett, tells the story of the battle for Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, through the eyes of the civilians and emergency workers who bore the brunt of the Russian onslaught. After Russian troops were repelled from the centre of Kharkiv in late February, they dug in on the outskirts, and began a bombardment of this city of 1.5 million people. Remarkably, half the population stayed, most sheltering underground, but many who were too old or reluctant to leave their homes were left at the mercy of Russian artillery and rockets. For 10 weeks, this documentary crew followed fireman Roman, as he and his team tried to put out the relentless fires started by this blitz; and two paramedics, Tatjana and Irina, who attempt to save civilian casualties. We see the personal impact on them in the most intimate of settings. The filmmakers also spent weeks underground with the thousands of people living and sleeping in subway stations and school basements. The film captures the spirit of the people who stayed, their anger and confusion at the Russian attack, but also their proud national spirit and determination to defy the Russian onslaught. Prods/Dirs: Mani Benchelah, Patrick Tombola; Exec Prods: Cate Blanchett, Edward Watts, Ben De Pear; Prod Co: Basement Films in association with Dirty Films
