The Real Windsors : Queen Of Steel | Channel 4 7 August 2022

The Real Windsors : Queen Of Steel | Channel 4

Episode 1

As the reign of the longest-serving British monarch draws to a close, the world’s most famous dynasty braces for seismic change. This three-part series shines a light on an institution at a crucial moment, with individual films on the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William. Searching questions about the resilience of the monarchy in a world of social media and political upheaval ask: what next for the Royal House of Windsor? How tough has the Queen had to be behind the scenes to build the Windsors into the global brand they have become? And has the fact of her success made her an impossible act to follow? The series includes interviews with people who have worked with the royals at close hand, some of whom have never spoken before on camera, personal friends, and people at the heart of the story, combined with rarely seen archive. As succession in the Royal House of Windsor beckons, the dynasty has in many ways never looked more secure, more streamlined, its future – they hope – more assured. But with the prospect of three elderly or middle-aged male monarchs across the century to come, could the creeping apathy of the young light the touch paper on a ticking bomb for the British monarchy? In episode one, Queen of Steel, Elizabeth II has protected the monarchy with steely determination for 70 years. Behind the smiling, waving and unveiling of plaques, she’s been an immensely successful CEO of the Firm as 84% of Britons think she’s done a good job. Even committed republicans have a grudging admiration for our longest-reigning monarch. As her reign nears its end, this provocative film explores the Queen’s long life, to reveal how the tough decisions she’s made, which have sometimes involved putting the institution before her own family, have shored up the monarchy. It also looks to the future, to ask whether her family will be plunged into crisis when she’s gone. Exec Prods: Nick Bullen, Teresa Watkins; Prod Co: Spun Gold
