From the giants of the oceans to the planet’s smallest creatures, this is the story of the animal kingdom’s tallest and smallest inhabitants.
Whether in the animal kingdom or in the world of plants, our Earth is inhabited by lifeforms both large and small. Huge blue whales, more than 30 metres in length, drift through the oceans, while miniscule pygmy seahorses take shelter from strong currents in the fragile branches of coral reefs.
The African continent is home to a number of different giants: African elephants balance on their hind legs to reach the tastiest leaves, watched by the significantly taller giraffes. In South Africa’s Namaqualand, a single rain shower is enough to bring the desert to life – innumerable varied tiny plants create a vast sea of colour.
From the giant trees and pygmy elephants of Borneo to South America’s hummingbirds and muriqui monkeys and the kangaroos and brush turkeys of Australia – the world is filled with fascinating life both astoundingly large and astonishingly small.
