Secrets Of The Museum | BBC Two 20 April 2022

In episode four, curators are searching for untold stories in the museum’s objects.

Curator Christine is working on a major new exhibition highlighting African fashion, spanning couture, photography, and design. Seventy seven year-old grandmother Gladys loans the V&A the kente cloth she bought in Ghana in 1960 for the christening of her daughter.

Christine has also taken a delivery of a colour photograph, taken in 1971 by London-based Ghanaian photographer James Barnor. James established the first colour processing lab in Ghana and also documented life in the country as it was becoming independent, as well as capturing the swinging 60s in London.

Meanwhile curator Nick has made a puzzling discovery of a large wooden dish or tray that he believes could be a rare example of a ‘barniz de pasto’ object, a style of decoration applied to a range of wooden objects made from the 17th century onwards in the Spanish colonies of Latin America. Elsewhere, curator Melanie wants to uncover the intriguing story of how so many works by sculptor Auguste Rodin ended up in the museum a century ago.

In V&A Dundee, curators are carefully trying to turn the page of a huge but fragile pop-up book to reveal a new scene. The page is from a giant pop-up book made by artist John Byrne, used as a backdrop for a touring stage production of the play The Cheviot, The Stag, And The Black, Black Oil, which made a huge impact on audiences across Scotland during the 1970s.

Secrets Of The Museum was commissioned for BBC Arts and BBC Two by Emma Cahusac, BBC Arts Commissioning Editor. It is a Blast! Films production and was Executive Produced by Alistair Pegg and Sacha Baveystock, and the Series Producer is Paula Fasht.
