Queen Victoria And The British Maharaja | Channel 4 7 August 2022

Queen Victoria And The British Maharaja | Channel 4 7

Acclaimed filmmaker Gurinder Chadha embarks on a journey to find out about an intriguing and largely overlooked figure of Victorian Britain: Prince Victor Duleep Singh. Born in England in 1866, Prince Victor was both a godson of Queen Victoria and a grandson of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the last ruler of the Sikh kingdom of Lahore. Victor’s marriage to Lady Anne Coventry created a sensation: it was the first time an Indian prince had married an English noblewoman. Although Queen Victoria gave the marriage her blessing, she was allegedly concerned about preserving the aristocratic bloodline and, at her behest, their marriage remained childless. Gurinder uncovers the fascinating theory that Victor had an heir through an affair with the Earl of Carnarvon’s wife, whose family seat was Highclere Castle, the real-life Downton Abbey. Gurinder also learns how Victor was denied the right to visit India, fearing he would try to claim his family assets at a time when the Punjabi independence movement was attempting to oust the British. The film brings to light extraordinary documents which show Victor’s involvement in the Indian independence movement and possible collusion with wartime enemies of Britain. In exploring this extraordinary episode in Anglo-Indian history, Gurinder reflects on her own story. Her ancestors were once part of Ranjit Singh’s army and, as a British Asian, there are parallels between Victor’s experiences and her own. From the heart of the aristocracy to returning to her own roots in Southall – the setting for her landmark movie Bend It Like Beckham – Gurinder shows how the remarkable life of Prince Victor still has the power to challenge and inspire.
