Series Synopsis

Pawnbroking is big business, every 24 hours pawnbrokers across the country buy, sell and loan against over a million pounds worth of our treasured possessions. And as the country emerges from a period of economic uncertainty the number of pawnbroking shops on our high street is rising. With assets ranging from 35 carat gemstones to designer watches and handbags, to classic cars, train carriages and even horses, a new breed of 21st century pawnbrokers are reshaping this ancient industry.

This series lifts the lid on this fascinating fast moving business where no two days are ever the same. Featuring everything from the treasured, to the unwanted and from the familiar to the rare and unusual, we follow each transaction from beginning to end- plotting the route the brokers take to make sure that they get the very best from every deal, and with sometimes tiny margins they must negotiate hard to secure a profit. Whether it’s a millionaire businessman in need of a loan, or a terminally ill grandmother looking to make memories with her family this series tells the real life story behind the valuables. With exclusive access to some of the nations most exciting dealers, unforgettable characters, heartwarming stories and an array of incredible assets this series reveals the emotional and financial stakes at play in the intriguing world of pawnbroking.

Episode 2

With the pawnbrokers back on home turf the series continues to lift the lid on the fast moving and fascinating world of luxury pawnbroking, telling the story of both the pawnbrokers and the customers walking through their doors. With over a million pounds worth of assets being traded every day, Britain’s pawnbroking business is booming, but as the price tags of the items increase, so do the risks involved.

In Sheffield, Dan visits retired couple Gloria and Mick, who are looking for a buyer for an 18th-century railway carriage that they have painstakingly restored – with a price tag of over two million pounds, Dan has to hope that his little black book of contacts can help him get the deal across the line. Meanwhile, in Cheshire’s affluent Golden Triangle, Kathy meets Norma, a terminally ill grandmother hoping that her tanzanite ring can help raise a fortune for her family.

In the Cotswolds, Miles hopes to move the pawn industry further into the 21st century by brokering the UK’s first pawn transaction using cryptocurrency – with a client looking to raise a loan against a rare sapphire ring worth over 200,000 pounds, could this be that ground-breaking deal that he’s been looking for? Meanwhile, artist David is looking to bolster his retirement fund by selling his celebrated painting of David Bowie in the capital, but can luxury brokers Adam and Emily navigate the volatile art market to secure the price tag David is hoping for?
