Extraordinary Escapes With Sandi Toksvig | Channel 4 24 March 2022

Series 2 Episode 5

Broadcaster and national treasure Sandi Toksvig sets out on more glorious adventures across the country, accompanied by some of the nation’s most fascinating and funny women. Travelling to awe-inspiring locations in search of Britain’s most extraordinary escapes, Sandi and her companions have been gifted the keys to some of the very best holiday digs – properties built to make the most of the stunning landscape on their doorstep. From a glorious renovated off-grid home on a remote Scottish island, and an astonishing cantilevered home over a river near the Brecon Beacons in Wales, to a stunning architecturally extended mill keeper’s cottage, complete with windmill, deep in the Norfolk Broads National Park, every episode explores a different region and promises lots of adventures along the way. Coupled with plenty of hidden-away places offering glorious sanctuary and quiet time, Sandi takes the opportunity to get to know her guests a whole lot better. In this episode, Sandi escapes to Scotland’s Highlands and Islands with agony aunt, psychotherapist and bestselling author Philippa Perry. Sandi whisks Philippa far away from the madding crowd of urban London, and their first stop is the tiny island of Eilean Shona, off Scotland’s west coast, where Sandi treats Philippa to a seriously off-grid stay in a beautifully renovated Victorian schoolhouse. They cook freshly caught hand-dived scallops on an open fire, but it’s a glorious trip to the brilliant white sands of the island’s beach that captures Sandi’s heart when she hysterically dons a pair of size 11 waders to get ashore! It’s to the mainland next, where their destination is no less remote. The pair take a ferry to a tiny but imaginatively designed two-person hideaway on the isolated peninsula of Knoydart, a place dubbed ‘Britain’s last wilderness’. It is literally four seasons in one day as they venture out on electric bikes to discover the astonishing landscapes, but the rain, snow and hail only make the retreat’s sauna and hot tub feel even more special. For their final escape, Sandi indulges Philippa’s colourful, party-loving streak with a stay in an extravagant and utterly flamboyant artist-owned home in Callander. Famous faces are already seated in the grand dining room awaiting them, and for afters, a playroom with its own bar. And at the bottom of the garden, where the River Teith flows, Philippa falls in love with fly fishing… courtesy of lessons from her newfound friend, Sandi.
