Episode 2: In the second episode the Ardens continue their time travelling journey in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, the golden age of the corner shop.
Packaged and branded foods like Cadbury’s Dairy Milk and Heinz Ketchup are now in plentiful supply, jostling for space on the counter with the brand new cash register.
To help their first day go off with a bang, Jo and Olivia make ice cream to sell in the shop. In the days before freezers, that means chipping ice from a huge block delivered by cart and churning by hand.
Sara pops in with a vintage fruit machine to encourage customers through the door and the family is joined by grocer extraordinaire Chris Bavin to learn the art of tea blending – a crucial skill for shopkeepers hoping to offer a more professional service.
The outbreak of World War Two brings a critical role for shopkeepers – rationing. They soon find themselves blamed by their customers for increasing shortages. Carrot lollies and ‘macon’ (mutton bacon) for lunch don’t go down well either.
1945 sees Victory in Europe and a community party is a moment for reflection on the vital role the corner shop played during difficult times.
